Lesson Notes by Jeff Fiorentino

This lesson's example track "Judge Vito" (a play on words with Judge Ito from the O.J. trial) was actually one that we had planned to include on the JFRocks "Vito Bratta-style Guitar Lesson Package" (available in our store).  The song and lesson was left off the product because we already had 6 tracks and very specific specialized lessons planned and picked out for it, and we felt that a 7th segment wouldn't have fit properly.  So that being the case "Judge Vito" ends up here as part 4 in our website based look at Vito Bratta and White Lion.

This lesson is a great example of writing an original track using elements of a guitar style.  Granted we do that often here on JFRocks.com but the Vito Bratta style is NOT and easy one to work with and incorporate into original materials.  That said, on the video lesson I'll walk you through the track and give you insights and tips into how the track is pieced together and where a lot of the fills and solo phrasing sections came from and came together..  With Vito Bratta in particular there's a certain way you need approach riffing and phrasing, and with any luck I'll be able to help you understand that a little bit, but I will say that if this guitar style interests you and you don't yet own a copy of our "Vito Bratta-style Guitar Lesson Package", I strongly encourage picking up a copy, it's far more of an in-depth look at the style than I can possibly offer here on the website.

Be sure as always to listen to the song example a couple times to get familiar with our track in order to get the most out of this lesson
and more importantly its jam tracks which hopefully you'll practice and record with.

Verses 1 & 2

The verse part is pretty straight forward on this track,
however you do need to let the notes ring out, so there is
some technique at play here so that the act of you fretting the individual notes doesn't cancel out anything already
ringing..  See video lesson for tips and also some embellishment ideas...

Bridges 1 & 2

The bridge part is more of a pre-chorus than a bridge..
Its made up of some chord hits with a fill.
On the video lesson we'll discuss adding more fills to it and mess with a little bit..  What's tabbed below
is a literal translation of the bridge that's on the song mp3.

Then into Chorus #2 which is tabbed below which leads us into the solo.

Chorus #2

Please read the note above highlighted in Yellow
, so you understand the arrangement as it's laid out in these lesson tabs.

SOLO - Part 1

The solo is divided into 2 parts.
Part 1 which is tabbed below is done at half time speed over the verse riff..
Part 2 is done over a unique chord pattern to the song.  There are a lot of techniques to cover in both parts
of this solo, it's not an easy lead by any means.  Part of any good lesson on the Vito Bratta guitar style is an
understanding of how to blend solo sections together, this is something I'll be talking to you about on the
video lesson as I walk you through these leads and techniques..

(x) = Notes in parenthesis are tapped

x h(x) = Tap harmonic.  The note in parenthesis is where the harmonic tapped, and the note to the left of the "h" is the fretted note

*x = A note with an *asterisk to the left of it indicates to sound the note with your finger, NOT the pick.

Half time feel

** While you're doing the trill and bringing the whammy bar up end your trill on the open 3rd string and dive bomb it downward with the whammy bar.
as you're dive bombing the open 3rd string hover your index finger over the 2nd fret to create a natural harmonic.  2nd fret harmonics are not
easy to get, however they become much easier to get as you slacken the string with the whammy bar which coincidentally is what you're doing
during your dive bomb of the open 3rd string anyway..  see the video lesson for tips and demo..

SOLO - Part 2

The second part of our solo is over a unique chord pattern to the song.
The chord names are written
above the tabs as they change and where the change.  Please don't just learn the solo..  Go deeper,
listen to the rhythm on the jam track, look at the pitches of the solo, see how they relate to the chord
changes..  This is where the real lesson lays..  It's not about the solo, it's about what's making the solo
tick.  Please remember that tip with every song you learn and every solo you yourself write..
