Lesson Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino

This lesson deals specifically with Texas style Boogie Blues.
There's a lot involved with playing effective Boogie Blues.  There's the sound, there's the groove, there's the band dynamic, and most important of all is the feel.  This type of Blues has a shuffle feel to it.  That means musically that the eighth notes are stretched a bit with the first one being slightly longer than the second one.

Another thing in play with this track and this style is the band dynamic.  There are actually 3 guitars playing throughout the main parts of our track.  Guitars 1 and 2 are doing the main theme riffing, while guitar 3 is doing a root based driving riff under it all to keep the riffing from sounding too choppy.  The bass is playing what the guitar is playing in most cases..

The sound is all Stratocaster through and through.  But each guitar is using a different pickup.  Guitar 1 is using the bridge single-coil, while guitars 2 and 3 are both set down the middle with all 3 single-coils going.

The leads are a combination of slide and non-slide and a mixture of pickup settings are used but mostly the Front and Middle pickup together, i.e. the 4th position on the Strat classic 5 way switch.

I'll offer additional tips on the video lesson but this should be enough to get your started..

As always please listen to the lesson's example track a few times before diving into the guitar tabs and video.  You'll get more out of the lesson that way for sure...

Guitar 1 plays a Boogie Groove, while guitar 2 plays a slide accompaniment..
See video for slide tips, there are some good ones to get this Dobro effect.

Guitar 2 - Slide leads over the guitar 1 riffing from above..  - Middle Pickup position used (3 single-coils)

- Glass slide was used..  Either Glass or Chrome will do the trick, but Glass is typically warmer in sound so I prefer it for Blues applications..

SOLO

The solo is a mix of slide and non slide,
we have noted in the tabs where the slide goes away.  The solo opens with slide, and is over a mix of a standard Boogie Blues Riff followed by the main theme riff of the song done 1 time through..

- Glass slide was used..  Either Glass or Chrome will do the trick, but Glass is typically warmer in sound so I prefer it for Blues applications..

Final Ending

The song comes around again after the post-solo transition riff
with a slightly lengthened version of the main theme riff and ends with a final ending outro riff.  There are two guitar parts that make up the ending, they are color coded in the tabs below.

Guitar 1 - Out of main theme riffing "B" part to end the song.
