Lesson
Notes by Jeff Fiorentino
This is part 2 of Harmonics here in the
JFRocks.com Guitar Lessons section.. The part 1 lesson dealt with
finding and making harmonics happen, and the different types of harmonics..
This part 2 puts it all in motion with a song example called,
"Opus in H minor", with the "H" of course meaning harmonics and not
harmonic minor just to be clear.. The song title is a play on words
since there is no key of "H" and this song is not really in Harmonic minor
per say, but as coincidence would have it Harmonic minor is used to create
mood in certain sections..
On the video lesson we'll cover the techniques used in the song example,
which include, Natural Harmonics in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and
12th positions, as well as artificial harmonics of all kinds
including, tap harmonics and the theory behind them.. Also
covered in this song example are tapped chord harmonics of 2 types,
octave and non-octave, and last but not least screams..
Also covered in this lesson is a more advanced topic which requires an
understanding of harmonic pitches, which was a topic covered lightly on the
Harmonics part 1 lesson, but, I will recap that topic in this part 2 lesson
because of its importance with the section of the song's intro portion that
uses 2 guitars to "harmonize with harmonics".. The same theory
applies to harmonizing harmonics as with harmonizing pitches of a scale,
but, most players are not aware of the pitch they're doing when making
harmonics. Which in turn makes harmonizing them impossible, so it's a
very rare technique, which if learned will set you apart from the crowd..
All this and more, including a walk through of the song example "Opus in
H minor" will be covered on the video lesson... That said, please
get familiar with the song example, and by all means "CRANK IT UP"!!
The louder it is, the better it sounds... To that end we gave the song
some real balls in the mix with a strong "Metallica'esque"
drum and bass sound and a heavy stereo mix on guitars
1 and 2...
Once you're familiar with "Opus in H minor" as far as its arrangement
and various parts, load up the video lesson and get a harmonics application
lesson that will have you doing more than just screams here and there or the
occasional VH rip off artificial harmonic fill...
Above all enjoy the lesson...

Song Intro

Tabs
are color coded:
Guitar 1 is Black
Guitar 2 is in Blue
**
Guitar 1 is always the main guitar, and guitar 2 is always the secondary
guitar. The 2 guitar's EQ settings are similar, with the exception
being that guitar 2 has a little less bass EQ and a pinch more presence on
it. This is to allow it to stand out from guitar 1 and prevents the
sound from getting mushy. You generally want your guitar 1 in
situations like this to be the "ballsier" of the two as far as sound goes..

****Harmonized
Harmonics section..... Guitars 1 and 2 do as tabbed below... Guitar
1 is doing tap harmonics, while guitar harmonizes those harmonics using mostly
the 3rds of their pitches, using natural harmonics instead of tapped ones..
Guitar 3 follows with chords.. Guitar 3 tab is in
Maroon color....

Pre-Kick in
This is a build up gallop riff
of which this and the kick in riff are designed to give you
artificial or scream harmonic riffing practice... We'll talk about these
and their pitches on the video lesson...

Main
Kick in / Main theme riff
Again more practice with artificial harmonics and
riffing... This riff is the same pretty
much throughout the track, both guitar 1 and 2 play the same thing, so this is
only tabbed once... It's also how the song ends....

Etc. etc. and it repeats around again and goes into the solo. See solo
tabs below.
SOLO
The solo is a great harmonics workout..
There is a mix of techniques all thrown together, and
with each technique the rhythm under it changes. Note the chord
names above the tabs. We'll cover the rhythm under the solo on the video
lesson because the harmonic pitches relate to those chords. I'm not an
advocate of doing harmonics blindly. I believe you should know your
harmonic pitches so that you can effectively use them in your leads as more than
just fillers...
See video lesson for the real White meat of what's going on here.. For
ease of reading the solo has been separated into its individual phrasing
sections. It's a piece of cake to follow along in the tabs as the song mp3
plays to get familiar with the tabs and solo itself..

*Tap harmonic riffing,
notice how they never die out, they swing and play off each other.
This is a classic Van Halen technique similar to what VH did during his
appearance on SNL in the late 80's..
(*h)
The trick is to either bend up or release a bend the moment the tap
harmonic begins to sound out. Also DO NOT release pressure on the
fretted notes, or you'll kill the harmonic..
