Lesson note by Jeff Fiorentino

For this lesson we're taking a look at Metal of course but not from a Beyond VH specific artist perspective, but rather from the genre, techniques and general sound perspective..

Tunings are a big part of it all.  As covered on the March 2011 Jeff's MailBag video segment there are many tunings used in Metal to help create the sound of EVIL or mayhem..  I covered a few of those tunings on the March MailBag video and I used one of them here.  So keep in mind if you want to play along with this song track and learn the song you've got to re-tune for it..

The tuning in use on this track is what I call a Custom C Power Tuning..  Basically you start by tuning the guitar to a Standard
E, A, D, G, B, E tuning, then drop the low 6th string's "E" to a "C", and drop the 5th string's "A" to a "G"..  Giving us the tuning
"C, G, D, G, B, E"..

Also used on this track was a "Dropped D" tuning.  This tuning was used for the acoustic rhythms during the interlude part of the song, which is technically the first half of the guitar solo itself..  That tuning also begins with a Standard E, A, D, G, B, E tuning, then you drop the low 6th string's "E" down to a "D"..  We're using more of a VH/80's metal style of the Dropped D so we're leaving the 1st string an E and not dropping it down to "D"..

It should be noted that ALL ELECTRIC GUITAR parts on this track utilize the C Power Tuning..  Only the small acoustic part under
the first part of the solo uses the Dropped D tuning..

From there this song and its lesson are all about arrangement, band dynamic, and the general style and vibe of Metal as a genre in music..  We'll cover these topics on the video lesson..

As always I encourage everyone to listen to the song example a few times to get familiar with it BEFORE diving into the TABs and Video Lesson..  The whole lesson is based around the song so it's kind of an important point for me to make..

Enjoy the lesson.....

Bridge Transition #2

2 Guitars play the same riff..
This is classic Metal double bass riffing, with a fill...  The fill is what makes it hard as far as timing..  You miss, people will know..  We're also moving the basic song structure up 1/2 step with this part.  Playing off of a C# instead of a C..  The 1/2 step chord change in Metal creates drama..  It's taken from Classical actually.. But Metal and Classical often intertwine..

(Bass drives C - Guitar tension riff is over C#) - C Chord implied by bass

The acoustic part and the lead part are color coded and tabbed below..  Take note that the acoustic guitar is tuned to a "Dropped D" tuning, D, A, D, G, B, E.  The lead guitar is the C Power Tuning that we've been using throughout this track..

SOLO Part 2 - Main Solo

This part of the solo has the song kicking back in with a slightly modified Main Theme Riff and Bridge Transition #1 under it..
I say slightly modified because the riffing as it was in the main song is too busy for the solo, so I just used the basic chord structure of the rhythms for under the solo..

You'll need a wah and a fast fretting hand for this one..  Usually with this Genre of music the solos can get quite fast especially when part or all of it is done over a fast double bass drum beat as this one is...  The Wah is optional, and if you need to fudge some notes that's fine, the point is to take note of the techniques and scale use..  And remember we're still tuned to the "C Power Tuning", C, G, D, G, B, E..

Humbucker pickup in the Bridge position was used for this part.

Note the tuning is C Power Tuning: C, G, D, G, B, E
