Lesson Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino

This lesson is part 5 in our Modes for Moods online guitar lesson series.
In this lesson we're creating a wind-swept mood through riffing and feel by mixing two modes that go great together.  In the case of our track "Wind-Blown" those two modes are Dorian, and Harmonic minor, and of course we don't count it here but we are also using Aeolian which is the standard minor key and scale at the root of it all.

Dorian mode as most of you should know is a minor scale with a Major 6th, so in the case of our song here in "Am" that Major 6th would be an "F#".  Harmonic minor is the minor scale with a Major 7th, and those notes would be "G#" in our song example.  That said, one of the best way to use modes is to mix where you use them.  Don't just pick a mode and only use that so as to lock yourself into a rule box of sorts.  What I've done with this track here if you take notice in the tabs is mix up how I used the modes throughout the riffing.  Note where the F#'s and G#'s are, they're not always there.  In fact the intro riff is both Aeolian and Dorian, where as the kick in chorus riff while similar gets Harmonic minor in play to add some wind-swept drama.

Harmonic minor is often over-used, but in reality it's all how you use it.  My hope with this lesson is that I can show you some subtle ways to use it and the other modes in this track to create a mood but not shove it down the throats of your listeners..

As always please listen to the song example track a few times BEFORE diving into the tabs and video lesson.  It's important that you've heard the song and are familiar at least with its arrangement to get the most out of this lesson.

Transition Riff

The transition riff leads us into and out of things in the song.
Really if the song had vocals it would probably be the best part of the chorus.  You'll see this riff throughout the song tabs but only here will it be singled out as a unique part of the song..  Just note that it is a transition riff technically..

Main Song Kick-in / Main Theme Riff Version 2 - (Aeolian, Dorian, & Harmonic minor)

For this version of our main theme riff we don't just drop it an octave and call it a day.
This part of the song is supposed to be dramatic.  Nothing reeks of drama more than Harmonic minor.  However I'm not a big fan of shoving modes down people's throats.  That said, the Harmonic minor element in this part of the riff is very subtle and only use in one double-stop.  The "G#'s" that signal the use of the Harmonic minor in this riff are highlighted in the tabs below in Green.  Take note that the "F#'s" that add the Dorian element to the riffing are highlighted in Yellow.

x = an F# to indicate "Dorian" mode use.
x = a G# to indicate "Harmonic minor" use.

Verse #1 - (Clean Verse)

This part of the song has a very surf-like vibe to it.
It was actually recorded with 2 guitars.  1 guitar tuned to our 1/2 step flat tuning and the other guitar with replaced strings to simulate the high strings on a 12 string guitar.  This guitar was played with some mild OCTAVE effect on it.  What's tabbed below is the guitar 1 part.

For lesson purposes take note that we open with an "A Major" chord, which adds a "C#" to our working scale briefly.  The second and third chords are a "Fm" and "E7", both of which contain a "G#" which send us into "Harmonic minor".  Take note also of where "Dorian" is used.  It's used in the ending part of the verse as a tension note (F#) in the F#m sus4 chord.

Lead Back Riff

This is the lead back riff that takes us back into the song.
There are 2 versions of this riff, 1 after each of the 2 verses.  This is technically version 1, though the two riffs are similar.

SOLO

The solo for this track utilizes a "Wah" and was improvised,
BUT I kept in mind the modes in use so as to not lose the "Wind-Blown"/Wind-Swept feel this track is supposed to have..  Take note as you look through the solo and hopefully analyze where the F#'s and G#'s are.  Sometimes they're bend up to and in some cases I've even added things to the leads such as the "D#" in spots, giving this solo what's often called a "tri-tone" element.  The flat 5th is often referred to as a "Tri-Tone", these "D#'s' could also be viewed as sharp 4ths.  Hopefully you all know the notes on your fretboard by now.  If you do not, please use the JFRocks.com Learn the Notes tool to
get familiar with your fretboard.

The solo is done over first the "F" Transition Riff, then into a mellowed out riff version of the Chorus Main Theme Riffing, then it ends over the ending part of the verse which could be looked at as the bridge really..  The chord names written above the tabs indicate what the Bass is driving..  See video lesson for added lesson and basic explanation of what you're soloing over etc..
