Lesson Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino

This lesson deals with a concept mood piece.
Creating mood pieces is an important element in songwriting whether you plan to work with film or commercial type work, or just write music for your band or own self.  Understanding how to create a mood, be it a dark old west feel like our "Clint Eastwood" example track, or a light airy feel always boils down to messing with Time i.e. mixing odd time with even time, and mode use.  I always teach using modes to create new moods and vibes within a song, and that concept is never more important than when creating a mood piece.

For our example track "Clint Eastwood" I drift through a few modes.  Aeolian (minor scale), Phrygian (minor scale with a flat 2nd), Harmonic minor (minor scale with a Major 7th), and I even touch on traditional country and western type scales such as adding the 3rd with the minor 3rd in the same scale to add that element of old southwest.

I always encourage everyone to mess with modes, try different recordings and play over them using different modes, and this lesson should give you a very strong example as to why that's important.

It's always a good idea to keep in mind though that different people will get different things from what ever mood piece you create.  Individual opinions will always vary.  For example some will get the Clint Eastwood in this track, while others will just hear dark.  That's fine, because the truth is the way in which the track is used will determine feel, such as with "Clint Eastwood" here with is a track I produced for the ending roll credits of a film a friend of mine is putting together.  After watching a western type film, it's easier for people to get the western vibe.  In either case it doesn't matter, what matters is that you have the "vision" in your mind's eye for what direction you're taking the song in.  Let your audience draw what ever conclusions they want.  That's the whole point of art anyway.

Enjoy the lesson, and please crank up our "Clint Eastwood" track a few times before diving into the guitar tabs and video lesson.  You really will get more out of it that way.  And of course as always dig deeper than just the riffing.  Draw some conclusions as to why things are sounding the way they are by doing some analysis of the tabs, i.e. the pitches I'm using from the specified chords, or what guitar 2 is doing while guitar 1 is doing something else etc.

Main Song Kick in / Chorus Riff - (4/4 Time)

This part of the song doubles as the Chorus and is the song's intro riff re-worked for 4/4 time.
Again this lesson
is about creating moods and a big part of that is manipulating time a bit.  If done right, the audience barely notices your used odd time anywhere in the song..

Also important to this song part is what guitar 2 is doing.  Guitar 2 is driving this riff whether you realize it or not.  It's giving the riff it's vibe and mode by creating a road for the riff to travel on..   Be sure and see both guitar parts.  Guitar 1 in Black and Guitar 2 in Blue.

Verse Riff - (4/4 Time)

The verse riff is what we call "The good the bad and the ugly" part of the song.
This is where things get very moody and we start to see some mixing of Harmonic minor and Phrygian mode scales, and even the classic western scale with the use of the G#'s and G's together in the E minor scale..  Be sure and check out BOTH Guitar 1 and 2 as they each play a roll here.  Guitar 2 is doing a slide riff under and between guitar 1's part.  I used a glass slide but any will do..

FYI:
A little extra Cavernous Reverb was added to guitar 1's part.

Verse #2

The second verse is basically the same as the first verse, only 1 note in guitar 2 changes.
However this verse is
half the length of the first verse.

Bridge

The bridge is actually one of my favorite parts of this song.
It's very cool and very Western sounding.  It's really just an
F minor and C minor chord change but it's the riffing and the way the two guitar parts interact that makes it vibe the way it does.  Remember, the little things matter.  Even a simple chord strum can make all the different to a given song part..

SOLO - (4/4 Time)

The solo for this track is done over the Chorus riff, and the Bridge riff..
The first half of the solo uses the front (neck) pickup on the Stratocaster, and the second half of the solo the part that's over the Bridge uses the back (bridge) pickup on the Strat.  Both are single-coil sounds.

Make note that in this solo we lose our western vibe for the first half of it over the chorus part.  I did a Bluesy almost SRV type thing.  But for me nothing says the southwest like SRV.  For the second half of the solo over the Fm and Cm chord changes of the Bridge we gain our western vibe back a bit, but still not too much.  My goal with the solo was to remove some of the darkness and tension that's present throughout the main song.  Of course that's not helped by the fact that the solo opens with a 12 gauge 3 inch magnum buck-shot going off..

**From here the song repeats around with another Verse, Bridge combo, then goes into the mellower odd time
final end.  See Ending tabs below.  Also see the video for any additional thoughts or lesson on the final Verse
and Bridge parts that lead up to the final ending..

Song Ending - (5/4 & 9/8 Time)

We drift back into a mellower, cleaner tone
and back into the same odd time used during the song's intro.  There is a slight variation in the ending riffing from how it was played in the intro, so the final ending is tabbed below..

FYI:  I used a Fender Stratocaster to record this entire track.  It's 100% single-coil pickup all the way through..
