Lesson Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino

This lesson deals specifically with what I call "EPIC Surf music".
Epic surf music is a phrase I coined for my own purposes that signifies surf music that takes you on a journey of some sort.  It's not just a flat-line song with one vibe or feel to it.  In the case of our track "Drop In Epic Surf" we begin with a mellow lull in the waves, and progress to full on surf riding, with a mellow/melodic ending..  These types of surf track are tough to write.  You need to have a concept in your mind's eye before you begin.  In the case of this track I began with the song's intro riff, and drifted into some classic Surf riffs and a re-use of a riff I wrote years ago that was actually used as the example riff for our surf part 1 guitar lesson here on the site.

Obviously the JFRocks "Sun, Sand, & Surf Music" Guitar Lesson package goes deeper into surf music than I can here online, but this is still a killer lesson and should give you the foundation for basic surf mode and key usage, as well as some great techniques..

PRIMARY Scales and keys in use -
Most of the scales in use are what we call Hybrid scales, meaning they are pieces of modes put together.  We have a few videos on the JFRocks MailBag page covering Hybrid scales for more info on those please go there.  The scales in use for our track here are, E Major with a flat 2nd and minor 6th, "Em", "E Major", "E Harmonic minor" and "F diminished" which is included as part of the E Major with flat 2nd and minor 6th scale.  Hybrid modes are very common in Surf music and frankly in most forms of music.  They are acceptations to the rules and are a great way to create out of this world tones and feels..

For those unfamiliar with Surf Lingo, the song's title contains 2 surf lingo phrases.  "Drop In", means to steal a wave out from under someone, and "Epic Surf", and or "Epic", means awesome or killer surf...

Please as always listen to the song's example track a few times before diving into the tabs and video lesson.  You'll get much more out of the lesson that way..  Plus it's a great track...  Enjoy it..

Transition Riff - E minor - E, F#, G, A, B, C, D

The transition riff for this track is done with 2 guitar parts, each doing its own thing,
followed by the bass playing along with guitar 1.  It's all about effect here..  Guitar 1 is doing a simple classic surf root, minor 3rd riff, while guitar 2 in another speaker is driving a muted open E 6th string..  The two together are where the sound comes from.  In a live setting if you only had one guitar you would of course do guitar 1's part..

Main Theme Riffing / Verse/Chorus Riff - E Harmonic minor - E, F#, G, A, B, C, D#

This riff is a redux of Surf Part 1's main riff.
It's a classic surf style riff, and was worth using in a full song format.  The riff itself while it may look easy, is a bit tricky as far as the picking goes.  I suggest a loose wrist for this type of riffing..  But do it how ever you want..  The idea here is it should flow like it's riding on water..

Bridge - E Major - E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#, & E Major with minor 6th - E, F#, G#, A, B, C, D#

The bridge takes us into a slight key change.
We tend to drift back and forth in this track between E minor and E Major, though we look at the whole track as E minor..  For the bridge we transition up to the Major 6th "C#" and also include the Major 3rd "G#" toward the end..   There are 3 guitar parts that make up this bridge..  Guitars 1 and 2 play the same thing, while guitar 3 plays chord changes..

Guitars 1 & 2 play the riffing, guitar 3 follows with chord strums, C#m and Am.

Chorus / Solo Lead in - E Harmonic minor - E, F#, G, A, B, C, D#

The chorus riffing is simply the Main Theme riff..
It's common in surf music to have the Verses double as the chorus
parts as well..

SOLO - Mixture of all scales from the rhythms used

The solo for this track takes us in a new direction.
It's a wild Wah progressive Surf-style solo.  Or at least that's what
I call it anyway...  It requires a lot of bending and wah technique..  I'll do my best on the video lesson to teach it to you, but really you just need to understand that the Wah is a tone shaper.  So use it to shape your bends.  I would expect this solo to come out differently with each person that plays it, because everyone uses the Wah differently to shape tones..  Just go with it, but remember to keep it flowing like water..  It is Surf after all..

The solo is done rhythmically over the Verse, Bridge, Chorus, and transition riff of our song.  Chord names or song sections are
written above the lead tabs below so you take the lesson of understanding what you're soloing over..
