Main Lesson
The Phrygian mode is a very dramatic mode with a lot of symphonic vibe to it. Below are some lesson notes for you to pair with the video lesson, and below the lesson notes are the tabs for the two main performance pieces on the video lesson. Enjoy the lesson....
Phrygian mode - Key of "A minor" will be used for lesson purposes.
Phrygian = minor scale with a flattened 2nd.
"A" Phrygian = A, Bb, C, D, E, F, G
Scale shape suggestion for practice - see video for usage and expansion tips....
"A" Phrygian - 5th position -- Shape can be moved around based on key. Bb's are highlighted...

By contrast the regular "A minor" scale would have a "B" not the "Bb" that's in our Phrygian mode.

Those are the main 3 parts to what I played. The arrangement is fairly easy to follow, and isn't important here in our tabs. I don't think anyone will have a problem with following the arrangement. What is important to notice is how the Phrygian mode is being used. Use it as a spring board for some of ideas of your own....
Phrygian Jazzy example piece which occurs at 18:02 on the video lesson
These are the tabs for the example of Jazz style Phrygian that I did. Phrygian is being used in both the rhythm and the leads. See video for added lesson here, because there are some important things to understand about moving scales around the fret board...

See video to tie all this together and get the most out of this page..... Also if you're really into the modes, and how to find them, use them, and manipulate them, I strongly recommend my "Soloing 101" DVD or CD ROM... It's very comprehensive and has helped many people over the years move beyond the blues box.....
