The technique lessons featured on this page are designed to be for Electric guitar.  Most of the lessons covered here however will transfer to acoustic without any issue.  This lesson page will be updated as often as possible.  The other pages on JFRocks and JFRocks UNplugged keep me rather busy and I try to keep all technique lessons to CD ROM.  What this page will do a lot of the time is expand upon lessons covered on various CD ROMs.  If this is the case the Category below will state which CD ROM the lesson is expanding on.  I hope you enjoy these mini lessons as I call them and remember all lessons from the past are located on the Lesson Archives page.

Lesson notes

This lesson will be a bit of a departure for us from the previous Two I did.  We will move away from the modes for a week here and look at a good old rock and roll riff.

When I say good old rock and roll riff I mean we will look at some general rock and roll patterns and things to do.  Let's say you walk into a music store and are trying out a Stratocaster.  Hmm?  What will you play, there are 20 or so people in the store.  You don't want to sound like a Jack Ass.

This lesson will focus on generics but generics with a twist.  As always Rock and Roll is less about the notes and more about the phrasing.  The notes in generic Rock and Roll tend to be blues box based or conform to pentatonic scale theory in general but the phrasing you choose to do can make all the difference in the world to how it sounds.  Some of the coolest riffs of all time are really, Mary had a Little Lamb simple as far as the notes being used.  They sound really cool though because of the phrasing and feel applied to the notes.

In this lesson we will look at a few examples of good old Rock and Roll riffs.  Hopefully these will give you some ideas of your own for making up riffs or pulling cool phrasing sections out of yourself right off the top of your head.

It should be notes this type of riffing works best when you wing it.  Too much thought and it kills it.

Main Lesson

See video for the crutch of this lesson, and an explanation of this type of riffing or hook writing..

Example 1:  Key of A or A minor, root minor 3rd, minor 7th kind of riffing.

Example 2:  Key of A or A minor, Blues riffing with Flat 5ths added in, A, C, D, F, G chord pattern but we add in a Flat 5th off an F#.  This is common for making riffs sound interesting.  Really this is a simple blues pattern done in the 5th position then moved to open position for a kick in, another common trick as well.

Chording of the riff.

       A               C       D                        G         D  C    F#b5                   F               G

E______________________________________________________________
B______________________________________________________________
G__2_______5___7_______________________________________________
D__2_______5___7________________7_5____________________________
A__0__x_x__3___5___x_x_x___5_5__5_3_________3~___3_3_3_3--5_5___
E__________________________3_3_______2__2_2______1_1_1_1--3_3___

Made more interesting by messing around with double stops and portions of the chords from above but keeping the phrasing or feel.

       A                      C  D        G                D  C                             F#b5                        F                     G

E_________________________________________________________________________
B_________________________________________________________________________

A__0____0_0_______________________________________________________________
E_________________________________________________________________________

Same feel dropped an octave and made more single note feel.

     A           C  D                        G           D   C      F#b5                           F              G

E__________________________________________________________________
B__________________________________________________________________

E__________________________________2____2_________1_1_1_1--3__3_____

Example 3:  Key of A, Using chromatics as a freeway to create feel.  Also incorporating the Major 3rd and minor 7ths in this riff sort of a Mixolydian feel.  This is sort of the opposite of what we did in Example 1 which was minor 3rds and minor 7ths.

Basic chord pattern is below.  Then we riff it out ala Rhythm 101 CD ROM.

      A      G       D        A                C       D      G  D     A

E________________________________________________
B_________3______________________3_______________
G_2___0___2____2____2__5___7___0_2__2____________
D_2___0___0____2____2__5___7___0_0__2____________
A_0___x________0____0__3___5___x____0____________
E_____3________________________3_________________

Riffed out version, using chromatics and incorporating the Major 3rd this time around with the minor 7ths.  Notice the feel remains the same.

     A              G             D               A
