Lesson Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino

This lesson is a mix of VH styles and sounds
from later Sammy era VH chorused out tones to earlier Van Halen 1 and II Phased out sounds..

The idea here with this track is really for me to give you some ideas on what VH "might" do with a more rigid playing style like Boston.  Now that's not to say that Boston doesn't rock, they do..  BUT, Van Halen is a bit more loose than Boston and I've reflected that looseness in this lesson with all of the instruments and not just the guitar.

Couple minor points of note before you dive into the lesson track, tabs and video lesson.  The guitar is tuned 1/2 step flat as we often do with Van Halen style lessons, however the Bass is actually tuned 1/2 step flat with a dropped D, basically the Unchained tuning.  What that does is add some thunder to the verse and chorus parts of the song.  Take note though that the guitar is NOT tuned with any kind of dropped D, it is simply a 1/2 step flat tuning..

Enjoy the lesson and remember to listen to the song example a few times to get familiar with it before you dive into the guitar tabs and video lesson..

Chorus Lead in

This part has 2 separate guitar parts each fairly important to its sound.
However in this case if you were just 1 guitar doing this version in a live setting you would probably want to play the guitar 2 part and let the bass carry the root chord notes...

Guitar 1:  2 to 3 quick hits on the chord then let it ring out..  See video for help..

Chorus #1

What I did here was basically just adapt this Boston riff for Van Halen.
I changed the position of the C chord first off, then a syncopated the rhythm of the riff a little bit from the original more rigid Boston riff..  It's not a better riff this way, it's a different riff with more of a VH feel, and that's what VH often did with cover songs..  That's what these lessons are all about..  The same vocal could be placed over this riff as is on the Boston song, however this riff is designed more for a DLR or Sammy Hagar type..

SOLO

This is a semi-melodic Phased out VH solo mock-up of the "More than a feeling" solo.
I've used mostly the D Major scale used by Boston for their solo, however I've slipped in a few "G#'s" in places to add the ever so prominent Late Sammy Era VH Lydian mode effect, ala "Baluchatherium" and countless other tracks..

This is a good example of a VH style loose take on what was originally a fairly straight up melodic scale based lead on the Boston track...  Use my scale and positioning as inspiration for you to fly off in your own directions with this, and be sure as always to know what you're soloing over.  The chord names are above the solo tabs, and we'll also go over the rhythms under these leads on the video lesson..

Final Chorus

The final chorus of this track blends in with the outro of the song.
However the riffing of the final chorus is different from the others as well..  You'll need to apply some Boston Feel with Van Halen Vibe..  Some of the accents are Atomic Punk style palm scrapes indicated with an "Ax" in the tabs...  See video for demo and some help..

Outro / Final Ending

What's tabbed below is the lead guitar part.
What the rhythm guitar is doing is noted above the tabs.  For the first half of the outro the rhythm is doing the Chorus riff of our song as tabbed above in the final chorus..  For the second half of the outro the rhythm guitar is holding down and F5/C chord which is also what we end the song on..  This is done for a final ending mood change, taking us from D Major to D minor in feel..

*Basic tabs given for ease of reading.  Embellishment is strongly encouraged as if Van Halen did do this,
it's highly unlikely they would play it the same way twice anyway..
