Lesson
Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino
Part of the lesson with adapting styles is or in this case "Vh'izing
Originals" is to understand the process a bit.
To that end (and assuming you've all by this point
heard the finished song track with all of its riffing and solos etc.)
is an mp3 of my
original bang-around "noodle" which was the inspiration
and idea I had for this lesson's song track.
Click
here to play the bang around idea that this track originated from
Take note that some of the riff is the same, and some of it isn't.
In fact the main theme riff of this track started out as just a very simple
F# pentatonic minor walk down of sorts.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In these "Vh'izing Originals" lessons I want to not only teach you some Van
Halen go to techniques, sounds, and arrangements, but I also want you to
understand that the VH guitar style can be a creative spring-board and is
transferable into any style your want, hopefully your own style of course..
It's not about the Phase 90 or the Flanger, it's about the approach to the
fretboard. Van Halen takes a very free spirited approach to music,
this allows for a limitless creative process. My hope for these
lessons as we embark on this series of original Van Halen influenced
materials is that you not only learn some cool riffs and solos to impress
your friends with but also you take the creative process I'm going to talk a
lot about on the video lessons and in the lesson text and run with it to
create your own music.
All this being said, please listen to this lesson's song example a few times
before diving into the tabs and video lesson so that you can get the
absolute most out of this guitar lesson.
Enjoy the lesson and as always CRANK IT UP!!

Song Intro Riffing
This intro part is
a free flowing loose lead in to the song. On the MP3 the Flanger was
done in Stereo, this is how we get the
ATBL-like spin where it moves from left to right in the speakers.

Bridge (pre-chorus)
This is a melodic build up to the chorus.. It's a combination of many
VH things from Women in Love to Drop Dead Legs. I realize the influences
may be hard to hear, but these are what I drew from.. Again like I always
say just because something or a certain song influenced you doesn't mean your
audience needs to have a clue about it..

Chorus
The chorus riffing takes us in a new direction. Vocally I hear a high
DLR singing around the vocals of this.. The tone
is a classic Phase 90 early Van Halen Brown Sound. In fact it's the exact
tone setting I used for the "Radar Love" Vh'izing cover songs track. This
riffing is tricky and as with all VH style stuff each time the chorus comes
around it's something new. The same could be said of all the parts on this
track, but it's really true with the chorus..
Please be sure to TAKE THE LESSON here.. It's not about the riffing, it's
about the timing and vibe.. The only reason this sound Vh'y and not
ZZ-TOPy is because of the timing and accents.. It has nothing to do with
the Phase 90.. See video lesson for more.

Chorus Lead in:
These differ from chorus to chorus, this one is
difficult, it's very Van Halen II inspired.
You have to be quick with the tap harmonic.
(7x) = a missed tap, it
ends up being a nothing note that's simply used to sound out the final 3rd fret
C.

SOLO
This solo uses a 5150 era VH tone. It's all about the Chorus and heavy
reverb.. The techniques in the solo
however range from early DLR to early Sammy era.. See video lesson for
help with this, and remember the tabs
are easy to read and laid out in their individual phrasing sections..
Follow along with the mp3 first, then dive in.
Then let me help you with it on the video lesson.
The rhythm under the solo is a unique riff followed by the bridge riffing.
See tabs below so you know what you're soloing over
as without knowing that there is no real lesson for you..
Rhythm under the solo:
This is the unique riff that most of the solo is over. Toward the end
of the solo the rhythm drifts to the standard bridge part.

Final Ending Bridge
In this arrangement the Bridge part is our final ender. This is mostly
because it's the basis for what I call the
"Tension melody", and Van Halen often likes to end things on a tense note or
chord hit.. That said there are
Million different ways we could end this song with scale downs and dive bombs.
This is a power chorded out
bridge with some unison bend accents from a guitar 2 that pops in for the final
ending..
