Lesson
Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino
As
most die-hard JFRocks.com fans and followers know, every May for the
past 4 years now we've done this special segment of our "Vh'izing cover
songs" guitar lesson series called "Van Zeppelin". I look
forward to these each year. Last year's "Dazed and Confused"
lesson and song track was a blast to do and probably the most popular online
guitar lesson in JFRocks.com history with over 80,000 downloads to date.
For the past few years I've focused on the first 2 Led Zeppelin releases.
This year I went a little deeper into the Zeppelin catalog and fast
forwarded to Zep's 4th release a.k.a. "ZOSO"
and the track "Misty Mountain Hop", which was always one of my
favorite songs on the album and one that I've wanted to "Van Halen'ize"
since we started these Van Zeppelin lessons.
That said, our "Van Halen'ized" version of "Misty Mountain Hop" is very
different from the Zeppelin version, but that shouldn't be a big surprise to
anyone who listens to what I'm trying to teach because of course we do a lot
of intentional re-writing for any Vh'ized cover song, not just Van Zeppelin
stuff. For example when Jimmy Page does a single note riff, I do a
mixed double-stop single note riff. For the complicated verse parts of
the song, Page does a double-stop 7th and diminished chord riff. What
I did for our "Vh'ized" version was a mixture of 2 separate verse types.
To create both verse versions I did some complex chord substitutions and
turned them into riffs through some trial and error with a dummy bass track
I had pre-recorded. The 1st verse is a flanged riff, and the second
verse is a chord riff. You can easily sing the "Misty Mountain Hop"
verse lyrics right over our "Halen'ized" version without a problem. We
didn't put vocals on our track for this lesson, but you can bet yer behind
we were singing it as we were mixing it. The vocals fit perfectly if
you apply a slight D.L.R. twist them with a D.L.R. style scream or chirp
here and there, which of course is fine since this is a song version that
was written as though Van Halen did a version of it.
Very important to these Van Halen-style lessons is understanding the band
dynamic within Van Halen.. I always talk about you thinking about the
whole band when you're learning the Van Halen style. Yes it's about
Eddie and how he plays, but equally as important is how Alex plays, and how
the singer be it D.L.R. or Hagar approaches the vocal melody, and of course
how the bass plays in the band. Like we've talked about on other "Van
Zeppelin" lessons, Mike Anthony is the polar opposite in most cases to John
Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin. J.P.J. will usually play Page's riff
right along with him, where as Mike Anthony rarely plays a given riff along
with Eddie. In Van Halen the bass drives a related note to create
either tension under the given guitar riff, or a driving thunderous root
note to help drive the guitar riff along. A good example of a mixture
of those two things is "D.O.A." off Van Halen II, where Eddie is playing the
guitar riff which is rooted in an F#m7 chord, and Mike Anthony is driving an
"A",, then after a couple bars an "F#", creating a tension and release
of tension effect, thus changing the whole mood of Eddie's guitar riff.
If Mike Anthony where just playing the riff with Eddie, it would a
completely different song with a totally different mood and backdrop..
In fact it would sound more like a Led Zep'ized version of a Van Halen song
in that case.. So if you want to understand how Eddie Van Halen plays,
you really must also understand the band dynamic he plays within as well in
order to develop the correct vibe and feel..
There's a lot of lesson here, and a lot of ground to cover. Like I
always say with these "Van Zeppelin" lessons or any "Vh'izing cover song"
lesson for that matter, there's a lot of re-writing and new riff creation
with these songs. Van Halen's creativity is second to none which is
what makes VH a great style for guitar students to learn from. It's
not about just beefing up a sound and putting power chords where there were
none before. So please dig deeper than just the superficial riffing.
Whether it's one of our "Vh'izing" lessons, or an actual Van Halen version
cover like "You really got me" or something, there's more going on
than just the riffing. It's about how the notes are attacked and it's
about looking at the original version of the song and figuring out how you
can twist it into something all you, or in this case for lesson purposes,
all Van Halen..
As always please listen to this lesson's song example a few times
before diving into the tabs and video lesson so that you can get the
absolute most out of this guitar lesson.
Enjoy the lesson and as always CRANK IT UP!!

Main Song Kick in - Main Theme Riff Versions 1 &
2
The main theme riff of this track is a classic early VH Phase 90 tone with a
little extra crunch to it.. There are 2 versions
of the main theme riff. One is a DOA style intro version and the other is
the chorus riff..
-------Wired in FX Loop--

**The X's indicate muted hits.
They are over the 6th and 5th strings respectively. By cupping the string
or deadening it around the 3rd fret area, you can get the semi-harmonic tones
heard on the mp3. See video for help and demo..

Verse #1
There are 2 verses on this track but the song splits the verses between chorus
riffing sections. There are also
2 different ways I did the verse.. One is a single note flanged riff with
harmonics, and the other is part chord riff.
This verse 1 is the Flanged riff with harmonics.. It's all based on the
original Zeppelin track but to make it original
and "Vh'y" I did some substitutions.. See video for demo and lesson of
course..

Verse #2
This time around we do a chord riff using some substitutions and Vh'style
riffing twist ups of the original Zep track..
The Van Halen song effect I was going for was sort of a Girl Gone Bad verse
kind of thing but with chords, either way the other worldly weirdness was the
point..

SOLO
This solo is done over an "ALTERED" main theme riff doubled in length
(the A riff) followed by the bridge part with dead stops
on the "A5" chord and the end of it...
That said I went for an early VH Phase 90 guitar tone, and a lot of tapping.
I wanted to make this a good lesson and
flow and follow through with tapped solo sections.
See video lesson for example of the riffing you're soloing over and a great
lesson on this type of Van Halen style lead playing..

Final Chorus and Outro Riffing
The final chorus is really just a doubled version of the main theme riff version
2. There are no fills or anything it was just a crankin' run of the
riff.. The outro is where things change up.. It's a unique part to
the song and really is a
classic early VH era style ending, with a little bit of "Women in Love" flair
and vibe to it, at least rhythmically anyway..
The tabs below are laid out as guitar 1 in Black tab, and the guitar 2 leads
below those in Blue Tab. It's important
to learn both parts for lesson purposes and do some comparison of of them to see
what notes are being tapped over what chord etc.. The riffing is the
by-product of what's making it happen, so please do yourself the favor of
digging deeper than this or any other riff's surface and learn what makes it
tick...
