Lesson
Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino
This track idea has been requested more times than I can count.
To keep the notes simple my tips are to have fun with it, and remember that
EVERY SINGLE NOTE is IMPORTANT. This is especially true with the VH
guitar style. Every note, even a passing muted hit means something to
the given riff or solo phrasing section.
The main bass riff of "Money" itself has been reworked into a guitar
riff done using various change ups and VH inspired transitions. These
change ups are a mainstay of the VH guitar style and how Van Halen
themselves approached cover songs. Everything is loose and almost free
time, this is especially true with the song's Flanged out ending part.
Really for a song like this it's about understanding what chords might be
under the Money bass riff, and with that information you can piece together
what scale notes can be used to embellish the riff and add some flair to it
to make it a bit more flashy to suit the VH guitar style.
As for time, this track not unlike the Pink Floyd track is a mix of 4/4 and
7/4 time. I've gone and mixed it up even more and added what I call VH
style drop offs, with add an extra 4/4 measure here and there. These are heard by you the listener as rest points
peppered into the main theme riff of the song.
The sounds on this track are classic VH tones ranging from early "Little
Dreamer" type tone on the main theme riffing and solo to VH Flanged out
riffing at the very end of the track.
All that being said, as always I recommend you please listen to this lesson's song example a few times
before diving into the tabs and video lesson so that you can get the
absolute most out this (in my humble opinion)
fantastic guitar lesson.. As always please also do yourself the favor
of reading all of the lesson notes that I've written in with the
guitar tabs. The REAL LESSON with all of this is not only in the
guitar tabs, but also what I'm teaching you and explaining on the video
lesson and in the performance notes written here with the tabs.
Above all I hope you enjoy the lesson and CRANK UP the song track!!

Song Intro -
7/4 Time
This intro part is
a free flowing loose lead in to the song.
The Phase 90 was wired through my amp's FX Loop

**IMPORTANT:
Wiring the Phase 90 through the FX loop of your amp
i.e. after the pre-amp instead of before it on the floor in your string of
pedals
is purely OPTIONAL!! I only share this tip because
people write in and like the sound we get here for VH and ask how we got
it.. Well, that's a
big part of how we get it. Let me be very clear that
this is MY OWN TRICK figured out through more than 25 years of trial
and error, and not
necessarily what VH himself did with his Phase 90. But
who really cares how VH hooks up his stuff anyway, you and I need to get the
sound on
our stuff at home in our basements, garages, laundry rooms,
and where ever else we've been shoved with our guitar equipment in the home.
Always remember that you're trying to reproduce the finished
fully produced recorded VH tone from the VH albums at home without the
benefit
of a sound engineer and music producer etc. For more
tips on getting a good Van Halen Brown Sound at home please visit our VERY
POPULAR
newly re-written by yours truly

Thanks, Jeff
Fiorentino

Main Song Kick in - 7/4
Time
This kick in point is where the actual main theme riffing and and leads come
into play. We look at this as the guts of the song. The song
ends where it began with free time riffing based on the Money bass riff.
However during this middle part we keep a real tight early VH vibe going..
See video lesson for help with all of this riffing, as it's not as easy as it
looks to get it to sound right. The mutes and little things are very
important..

Bridge - 7/4 Time
The bridge part to this track is again a guitar riff take off on the bass
bridge for Money, however in true VH fashion I've added a guitar 2 harmony using
unison bends... Tabs are color coded below..

SOLO -
4/4 Time
This solo is a classic early VH style solo using techniques from pretty much
the entire DLR era, including VH1, VH II,
Diver Down, 1984 etc. etc...
About the rhythm under the solo:
The solo is over a
VH altered version of what the leads in "Money" is over. I'll demo the
rhythm track for you on the video lesson but for lesson purposes all you need to
know is that it's a walking chromatic
bass line pattern.
Over a "B5" root chord "D walks down to B", then the change up is
over an "E5" root chord and it's "E walking down to C#" in a double time
feel from the first pattern..
The chords are
written above the lead tabs as a "B5" and "E5" respectively.. Any other
chord changes written above the lead tabs such as for the ending parts of the
solo are indicating the root chords the bass and rhythm guitar are doing, and
not necessarily the chords being done by the lead guitar during the solo, so
please keep that in mind.
Also please make note of the positions I'm playing in and the how I'm bending
and using scale patterns. See the video lesson for additional tips
and lesson beyond just what's tabbed here...
