About Vh'izing Original Songs Guitar Lessons

In these "Vh'izing Originals" lessons I want to not only teach you some Van Halen go to techniques, sounds, and arrangements, but I also want you to understand that the VH guitar style can be a creative spring-board and is transferable into any style your want, hopefully your own style of course..  It's not about the Phase 90 or the Flanger, it's about the approach to the fretboard.  Van Halen takes a very free spirited approach to music, this allows for a limitless creative process.  My hope for these lessons as we embark on this series of original Van Halen influenced materials is that you not only learn some cool riffs and solos to impress your friends with but also you take the creative process I'm going to talk a lot about on the video lessons and in the lesson text and run with it to create your own music.

All this being said, please listen to this lesson's song example a few times before diving into the tabs and video lesson so that you can get the absolute most out of this guitar lesson.

Enjoy the lesson and as always CRANK IT UP!!

Song Intro

This intro part
is a run through of the song's main theme riff, followed by a power chord lead in to the main song.  This type of
arrangement is textbook Van Halen, but translates very well into any Rock song you may be writing..

Verses 1 & 2

Both verses in the song are pretty much the same so we've lumped them both here in one tab section.
The verse
is all about timing and vibe.  You have to get the feel right and that involves some subtle things that cannot be tabbed such as ever so slight palm mutes and release of mutes in various places.

See video for help.  If you do this riff right it should sound like there's a Drop D tuning in place even though there isn't..

Bridges 1&2

While not identical both bridges are close enough to the same for us to lump them below in one tab section.
The bridge part of this song is a very important part of this lesson.  It's about creating a mood element using a guitar 2 to add melody.  If you simply play either guitar part by itself you'll be able to quickly tell that they need each other to create the drama the bridge has.  This is a classic case of band dynamic and the other instruments changing the direction and feel of a basic guitar theme riff..  See video for added lesson and demos..

Guitar 1 - The main riff, heard in your left speaker.

**This is a tricky riff, be sure to palm mute almost every note to prevent too much ring out.  While you want some ring out too much will cloud the riff..  VH is the master of these what I call open string bounce riffs..  His top 2 classics for this style of riff are the transition riff in Panama, and the main theme riff of Top of the World.

Chorus Riffing - (Main Theme Riffing)

This is a doubled chorus of main theme riffing.
No major changes but there is a dive bomb fill on one of them.

Pre-Solo Interlude

There are 2 guitar parts here.  Guitar 1 is what is tabbed below.
Guitar 2 simply follows the main root chord changes then does the power chord solo lead in with guitar 1.  This part is an elaboration on the guitar 1 Bridge part of the song and uses stereo Flanging to get the sound..

SOLO

The solo is over a rhythm very similar to the rhythm done under the "Best of both worlds" track off 5150..
It's a great groove, and takes our song into the Mixolydian mode (Major scale with a minor 7th).  This solo is tricky but its phrasing sections are defined.  Still though you must listen to the rhythm so that you can groove with it and swim around it, otherwise it will sound very stale.  I'll demo the rhythm under the solo on the video lesson, it's marked in the tabs below as an "E riff".

Song Outro

After the solo the song comes around with another verse, bridge and doubled chorus
not too different from the others which is why we tabbed them only once earlier.  The final outro of the song comes out of the final doubled chorus and is tabbed below for you.  It's not overly tricky but there is some timing involved.  On the jam tracks you have a click count going to help you out.
