Lesson
Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino
Part of the lesson with adapting styles is or in this case "Vh'izing
Originals" is to understand the process a bit.
To that end (and assuming you've all by this point
heard the finished song track with all of its riffing and solos etc.)
is an mp3 of my
original bang-around "noodle" which was the inspiration
and idea I had for this lesson's song track.
Click
here to play the bang around idea that this track originated from
Take note that some of the riff is the same, and some of it isn't.
In fact the main theme riff of this track started out as just a very simple
chord pattern.

In these "Vh'izing Originals" lessons I want to not only teach you some Van
Halen go to techniques, sounds, and arrangements, but I also want you to
understand that the VH guitar style can be a creative spring-board and is
transferable into any style your want, hopefully your own style of course..
It's not about the Phase 90 or the Flanger, it's about the approach to the
fretboard. Van Halen takes a very free spirited approach to music,
this allows for a limitless creative process. My hope for these
lessons as we embark on this series of original Van Halen influenced
materials is that you not only learn some cool riffs and solos to impress
your friends with but also you take the creative process I'm going to talk a
lot about on the video lessons and in the lesson text and run with it to
create your own music.
All this being said, please listen to this lesson's song example a few times
before diving into the tabs and video lesson so that you can get the
absolute most out of this guitar lesson.
Enjoy the lesson and as always CRANK IT UP!!

Song Intro
This intro part is
a free flowing dynamic tap pattern that crosses strings and positions.
My suggestion is you learn it slow first
then work it up to speed. Not because it's overly difficult but more
so you can memorize the patterns.

*Chord names
written above the tabs for this tapping section are the root notes being
driven by the bass to create the mood and feel..

Pre-Kick in Main Theme Riff
The "interlude'ish" main theme riffs are slightly altered from the main song,
but the same feel will apply.. Remember to watch the tab for the
bends. It's the bends that make this riff difficult.. Also keep the
drum beat and its feel in mind when playing these riffs..

Main Song Kick in / Main Theme Riffing
This is where the full band kicks in.. We go for a wider stereo sound
here for this riffing, and it's a little more straight forward than our
interlude type riffing is. When I say interlude for a song like this, I
mean the stand-alone theme riffing with no band around it such as we just
completed and after the solo..

Bridge
The bridge to this song also doubles as the first part of our guitar solo
rhythm.. This bridge which would be designed to have vocals over it is
done with 2 guitar parts. A rhythm and a vocal melody done with classic VH
style unison bend ring-outs..
Tabs are color coded. The guitar 1 rhythm is in Black tabs, and the
guitar 2 vocal melody lead is below that in Blue..

SOLO
The solo for this track uses a late Sammy Era VH sound.. Basically
similar to the Chorused sound used on 5150 and OU812, but it has a bit more
crunch to it, and a little more warmth..
That said, this solo is the reason this track is an 8 on a difficulty scale from
1-10.. The reason being it's not a traditional phrasing situation.
It's very random yet there are phrasing patterns at work, though they are very
short and almost bleed together.. The real trick to a solo like this is to
have it come across with feel. The Van Halen conversational aspect of
guitar playing, i.e. the punctuation in your phrasing concept I talk about all
the time is really at play here.. Memorize the tabs, then watch the video
lesson for a great slow down of this thing.. Be sure and also watch the
tabs for when the delay comes into play so you know when to use it and turn it
off again..
