Lesson
Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino
This lesson deals with Melodic Rock, or more specifically Melodic Dark
Metal..
Sometimes when you say the term Melodic Rock people think of some of the
snore music from the 70's, "If a picture paints a Thousand
words" kind of stuff.. In reality the term Melodic Rock
simply means incorporating some vocal melody into the rhythms and lead
accompaniments...
With our track "REVENGE",
we have quite a lot going on. We have a track that tells a story from
start to finish, beginning with a
light 12 string and 6 string intro, with tension filled neo-classical style
chord changes.. That's followed by 2 separate kicked up power chord
riffs, which is then followed by the intro of the song done with electric
this time, and 2 additional guitars added in doing a dark lead
accompaniment, and so forth and so forth..
We do a lot of this with mode changes. We have many modes lessons on
JFRocks.com, in our Songwriting series, in our Modes for Moods
series, (both of which can be found on the main JFRocks
Techniques & Genres lesson page) and even 2 products "Soloing
101", and
"Soloing
101 Part Deux" in our
store, all
designed to help you understand the importance of modes in not only
songwriting, but song structuring and arrangement as well.
Our song "REVENGE"
in its key of "Em" drifts
between "Aeolian", "Phrygian", "Locrian", and "Harmonic minor"
to give us its element of darkness, but knowing that is only part of the
story. The full story resides in how and when these modes are used,
coupled with how the song is orchestrated, meaning what the bass is doing,
drum beats, secondary guitars etc. etc. etc. See video lesson for more
explanation of the modes and orchestration in use...
We'll cover all of these topics and more on the video lesson for this track.
In the meantime please as always listen to the song example "REVENGE"
a few times BEFORE diving into the tabs and video lesson. You really
will get more out of the lesson in the end.

NOTE Guitar 1 in your left
speaker is a 12 string, and guitar 2 in your right speaker is a 6 string.
This blending makes for a very cool effect,
and is one I encourage everyone to try in their own recordings when ever
possible..

Chorus Riff
- Aeolian & Phrygian modes used
The chorus riff is a serious mid-range toned dark metal power chord riff
which drifts in and out of Aeolian and
Phrygian modes. It's played with 2 guitars 1 in each speaker, and should
have some flair to it.. I suggest all
down-strokes for this riff..

Verse Theme Riff #2 - Aeolian & Locrian
modes used
The first verse theme riff is actually the intro
chording to our song.. That comes in again
later in a more beefed tone after this part.. This part is a faster feel
and is what I call slick riff.. It's actually inspired by Metallica's
Enter Sandman but you would never really tell that.. One of the things I
teach you guys on this site is how to take something that inspires you and twist
it around into something completely new.. This riff is a great example of
that..

Verse Theme Riff #1
- Aeolian & Locrian modes used
Again as was said under Verse riff #2, these
are reversed in name (not arrangement) because
this riff is actually a modified version of what we opened the song with..
We have 3 guitar parts here, all over-driven, each adds an important element
to this song section. The real lesson here is in how all 3 work
together, thus what each is doing is important, so please learn all 3 parts,
or at the very least try to understand all 3. We'll get into more
detail on the video lesson of course.. Tabs are color coded below to
show what each part is doing..

SOLO
The solo for this track is as it was asked to be
written by the person who hired me to write it..
The solo is what I a many others typically refer to as a
blended solo, in this case using 80's style hard rock techniques that keep
with the mood of the track.. Blended solos are solos that are phrased
separately to sound like multiple guitarists are taking different parts of it,
when really it's just one guy.. That said some adjustments in timing would
need to be made to pull it off in a one guitar in a live setting situation, but
overall it's a breeze to do that.
The solo itself starts off over the Verse 2 kicked up riff, then it rides
out with the Verse 1 melodic riff i.e. the guitar 1 part for the song
part we just finished that led us into the solo... I've indicated above
the solo tabs what rhythm part you're soloing over. We'll cover the
techniques on the video lesson... Tabs have been simplified in spots for
ease of reading purposes.
