Lesson Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino

In these "Vh'izing Originals" guitar lessons I want to not only teach you some Van Halen go to techniques, sounds, and arrangements, but I also want you to understand that the VH guitar style can be a creative spring-board and is transferable into any style your want, hopefully your own style of course..  It's not about the Phase 90 or the Flanger, it's about the approach to the fretboard.  Van Halen takes a very free spirited approach to music, this allows for a limitless creative process.  My hope for these lessons as we embark on this series of original Van Halen influenced materials is that you not only learn some cool riffs and solos to impress your friends with but also you take the creative process I'm going to talk a lot about on the video lessons and in the lesson text and run with it to create your own music.

All this being said, please listen to this lesson's song example a few times before diving into the tabs and video lesson so that you can get the absolute most out of this guitar lesson.

Enjoy the lesson and as always CRANK IT UP!!

Verse Riffing - Verse #1

The verse riffing changes throughout the song, but it's composition is always the same.
It's a slick little VH style riff that's made up of semi-harmonics, artificial harmonics, and a really sounding cool minor 7th power chord that I'm sure Van Halen himself would eat up and likely has..

Bridge

The bridge is made up of 2 guitar parts.
Each is very important to the flow of it and how it sounds to the listener..
It's a good idea to learn both parts.  But if I were 1 guitar in a live setting, I would blend the two with primary focus being on
guitar 1's part..

***As an interesting note to JFRocks.com fans this part was originally only intended to be the outro of the song..  I had another part written for the bridge that was
sort of a Simple Rhyme type thing.  But the outro sounded so good to us in playback that we went back and just said screw it, let's make that the Bridge too..

SOLO

The solo for this song is a very tricky Whammy bar oriented Van Halen style solo..
This solo actually uses a faster setting on the Phase 90 than the rest of the song (see settings page) and is done over the Main Theme Riff chord structure, and a shortened Bridge.  What you're solo over is written above the tabs for you.  See video lesson for a great lesson on the techniques used in these leads...

Post Solo Chorus Riffing & Outro Bridge

There's a slight change in the riff here and a change in the drum beat and feel as well.
This is one of the little things that matters about this song.  There's also a big change to the ending Bridge from the earlier one as well..

Outro - Ending Bridge

This bridge differs slightly from the earlier one.
It's designed to be the ending to the song so it has more finality to it.  Make note of these little things, I'll point them out on the video lesson but really these little things are what makes your songs stand out from the rest of the stuff online or on the CD rack...
