Lesson Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino

In these "Vh'izing Originals" guitar lessons I want to not only teach you some Van Halen go to techniques, sounds, and arrangements, but I also want you to understand that the VH guitar style can be a creative spring-board and is transferable into any style your want, hopefully your own style of course..  It's not about the Phase 90 or the Flanger, it's about the approach to the fretboard.  Van Halen takes a very free spirited approach to music, this allows for a limitless creative process.  My hope for these lessons as we embark on this series of original Van Halen influenced materials is that you not only learn some cool riffs and solos to impress your friends with but also you take the creative process I'm going to talk a lot about on the video lessons and in the lesson text and run with it to create your own music.

All this being said, please listen to this lesson's song example a few times before diving into the tabs and video lesson so that you can get the absolute most out of this guitar lesson.

Enjoy the lesson and as always CRANK IT UP!!

Lesson 1

The JackHammer - (Theme Riffing, Intro, Main, & Verse)

In this lesson segment we'll deal with Van Halen's favorite double-stops, and the way this type of chord riffing is conveyed.  There are 3 main theme riffs tabbed below for you.

Lesson taken from Jeff's song,
"The JackHammer" - listen to it on SoundCloud

*Note, not all guitars can get 6th fret natural harmonics.  Any random harmonic-like noise will do the trick.  Jeff doesn't demo this part on the video lesson, but for accuracy purposes it has been transcribed for you as it is the actual lead-in to the main theme riffing of the song.

Main Theme Riff - (Standard Tuning)

Modeled after the feel of "Feel your love tonight's" pre-solo, this is actually quite a different riff.  But it's a good example of how using VH style double-stops in riffing can make pretty much anything sound VH'ey..

Lesson 2

Driving Amy - (Intro Riff)

In this lesson segment we'll deal with Van Halen style arpeggio riffing.  This riff is more of a mix between a "Hear about it later" and an "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" kind of thing.  The main intro theme riff is tabbed below for you, along with a song link of course.

Lesson taken from Jeff's song,

Lesson 3

Whet Dream - (Main Theme Riff)

In this lesson segment we'll deal with Van Halen's love of the open string.  Frankly, I love it too, and I do open string riffs all the time.  This riff chugs alone with a sideways groove feel.  No matter how you slice it, thanks to songs like "Panama" and "Top of the world" this type of riffing almost always sound VH'ey.  The main intro theme riff is tabbed below for you, along with a song link of course.

Lesson taken from Jeff's song,
"Whet Dream" - listen to it on SoundCloud

Intro Riff
- (Standard Tuning)

Be sure to control the open 1st string a little bit with your picking hand palm.  Not a mute as much as just ring-out preventing..

Lesson 4

Big Surf County Line Surf Rider - (Solo)

While this lesson isn't one of my Van Halen style pieces, I did throw in a classic Van Halen solo.  I love adding surprises to my surf pieces, and the solo tabbed for you below utilizes a classic VH scale, and is in the style of solos like "Feel your love tonight" and Eddie's "Big Trouble" solo from the unreleased Gene Simmons 1976 demo.  Lots of fun, and lots of Van Halen style lesson here.  I'll go into some detail about the scale and techniques on the video lesson.
