Lesson Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino

In these "Vh'izing Originals" guitar lessons I want to not only teach you some Van Halen go to techniques, sounds, and arrangements, but I also want you to understand that the VH guitar style can be a creative spring-board and is transferable into any style your want, hopefully your own style of course..  It's not about the Phase 90 or the Flanger, it's about the approach to the fretboard.  Van Halen takes a very free spirited approach to music, this allows for a limitless creative process.  My hope for these lessons as we embark on this series of original Van Halen influenced materials is that you not only learn some cool riffs and solos to impress your friends with but also you take the creative process I'm going to talk a lot about on the video lessons and in the lesson text and run with it to create your own music.

All this being said, please listen to this lesson's song example a few times before diving into the tabs and video lesson so that you can get the absolute most out of this guitar lesson.

Enjoy the lesson and as always CRANK IT UP!!

Lesson 1

Man Halen - (Main Theme Riffing)

In this lesson segment we'll deal with Van Halen groove riffing and delve into odd time Van Halen in the process.  Make note as well that we're incorporating a tap into our riffing, and also other "Tricks", such as palm scrapes for example.  See video lesson for detail.

Lesson taken from Jeff's song,
"Man Halen" - listen to it on SoundCloud

Lesson 2

Slaps, Taps, and Harmonics, "oh my"

This as promised in the "Techniques Lesson 1" video is an example of variations on Ed's famous "intro to Mean Street" technique.  While not something you'll need in day to day VH style playing, these techniques while advanced can carry forward and be broken up and used as go-between fills and fun little transitions in your own songs.  No VH techniques lesson would be complete without covering this technique.

Note:  the tabs indicate things to do.  The video will show you what they are and how to do them.  Techniques like this are not easy to tab.

Riff - (Flat Tuning - mild overdrive only, too much distortion will ruin this technique's effect.)

Remember, notes in (parenthesis) are tapped with your picking hand index finger.
