Lesson Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino

In these "Vh'izing Originals" guitar lessons I want to not only teach you some Van Halen go to techniques, sounds, and arrangements, but I also want you to understand that the VH guitar style can be a creative spring-board and is transferable into any style your want, hopefully your own style of course..  It's not about the Phase 90 or the Flanger, it's about the approach to the fretboard.  Van Halen takes a very free spirited approach to music, this allows for a limitless creative process.  My hope for these lessons as we embark on this series of original Van Halen influenced materials is that you not only learn some cool riffs and solos to impress your friends with but also you take the creative process I'm going to talk a lot about on the video lessons and in the lesson text and run with it to create your own music.

All this being said, please listen to this lesson's song example a few times before diving into the tabs and video lesson so that you can get the absolute most out of this guitar lesson.

Enjoy the lesson and as always CRANK IT UP!!

Lesson 1

Let there be Guitar - (Intro Taps)

In this lesson segment we'll deal with Van Halen classic style 2 hand tapping.  One of the mainstay techniques of VH, there is much more to it than just being able to do it.  I often say to young guitarists who seem to think they're ready for the big time because they can play something, "great, you can play it, but do you understand it enough to write it".  Too often their answer to that question is NO.  Hopefully those of you who come to JFRocks.com have learned by now to dig a little deeper.  And that's what we're going to do here as always.

Lesson 1 is a slick little slide and bend stand alone intro tap section.  Then further down the page lesson 2 is the main song kick-in tap section.  While it's great for you to learn the tapping and the techniques, we're going to dig a little deeper on this lesson and also explore the rhythm guitar under the kick-in tap section in lesson 2.  Because knowing how to tap is great, but knowing what the hell you're doing enough to write music to go with your tapping is not only beyond great, it's essential if you want to really call yourself a musician.  So let's get to it, and "Let there be guitar".....

Lesson 2

Let there be Guitar - (Song Kick-In Tapping)

Make note that aside from good tapping technique, which we'll cover on the video lesson, part of what makes this sound the way it does and come across to the listener the way it does is the rhythm guitar riffing going on under the soloing.  In some cases this is built around the arpeggio that makes up a given tap, but in other cases chord substitutions can be used as is the case here in a couple spots, and you simply work with a combination of what's in the key, and as was the case when I wrote and recorded this, just what felt right and sounded good.  Like I always say, know the theory so you can dig yourself out of a hole or get started with something, but never let the theory drive.  Always go with what feels right.. Odds are there's some weird theoretical reason why it works anyway, and you can always reverse engineer it later to give yourself that lesson.

Make note of the chords written above the tabs, they are the chords the rhythm guitar is riffing.  I'll demo both the rhythm and the taps on the video lesson, and give you some tips along the way..

**See chord chart below tapping section for chord shapes.
